What to buy...?

22 September 2006

Cars available for under £100, yesterday.I missed out on that Lancia. At the end of the auction the selling price was £102, just a tiny bit higher than the amount we're allowed to spend.

The shortlist of cars currently looks a little like this…
  • Audi 90 / 100
  • Citroen XM
  • Fiat Croma
  • Ford Sierra XR4i
  • Ford Scorpio
  • Isuzu Piazza
  • Lancia Dedra
  • Lancia Thema
  • Peugeot 605
  • Renault Feugo
  • Renault Safrane
  • Vauxhall Carlton
  • Vauxhall Senator

Sadly, most of those start at about £300, three times the budget we've got available. There's a disproportionate amount of French luxury cars as a) nobody wants them so they're cheap and b) they'll be incredibly comfortable, if not very exciting. Thrown in for fun are the Piazza and Fuego, but both are getting rare now. I'd love a Sierra XR4i, but most have been toyed with by 17 year old who love big exhausts and bad alloy wheels, or they're original and way too expensive.

Still, I've got a few hopeful bids on eBay, so we'll see what turns up.

The power of eBay

19 September 2006

A Lancia Dedra, yesterday.I can't help it. Every day I've been scouring the pages of eBay looking for a sub-£100 car that will last the 2,000 mile to Naples.

There's some fantastic cars about, but currently I'm tempted by a Lancia Dedra. This was the last car Lancia brought to the UK before going belly up, so that says a lot about the capabilities of this alleged BMW 3 Series beater. It wasn't a bad car, though, and there's a 1993 model nearby, currently sitting at £92.

What better car to arrive at Naples in than a clapped out Lancia. I'll fit right in.

I'm off to Naples!

01 September 2006

Naples, yesterday.Well, I will be next year. Following a lengthy chat in a pub with some friends, I've decided to commit myself and a currently unknown partner to a pan-European rally.

the only problem is that this pan-European rally must be completed in a car costing less than £100.

Yes, I've signed up for Staples2Naples 2007, a banger rally organised by Street Safari LLP. The 2007 event will be the fifth year this rally has run, and there's expected to be some 270 teams entering.

Entries will be confirmed in December so, until then, it's a case of sit back and wait.

Wish me luck.
